Casa Raíz
Built around three chechén trees rather than through them.
Tour coming soon
We film each house room by room. Casa Raíz is in the schedule — until then, the photographs are all honest.
A tree in the stairwell
The chechén runs up through the middle of the house and out through the roof. It is not decorative.
Freshwater cenote, private
Eighty metres along the path behind the house. Cold, clear, and yours.
Off-grid, quietly
Solar and a well. You won't notice, except that it's silent.
Casa Raíz is mostly open. Three of the four elevations are screen rather than glass, so the house is full of jungle noise at night and jungle light in the morning, and it never gets hot in the way a sealed building does.
The structure is chukum-rendered concrete and local hardwood, built around three big chechén trees that Renata refused to cut. One of them now grows up through the stairwell. There is a plunge pool on the roof deck and a proper cenote — cold, deep, entirely private — eighty metres down a path behind the house.
The beach road is fifteen minutes by bike. The house is deliberately not on it.

“We moved the foundation twice to keep the big chechén. It's now inside the stairwell and it is the best thing about the house.”
