Villa Sunda
A single concrete plane, cantilevered over the Indian Ocean.

The walkthrough
Six rooms. One continuous walk.
Tap a doorway and the camera goes through it.
74 metres above the break
The terrace sits directly over the Padang Padang channel. You hear the set arrive before you see it.
Built for the light
Every room faces west. The house was oriented to a single hour of the day, and it shows.
Staffed, quietly
A cook, a housekeeper and a driver, all live-out. They arrive at seven and you rarely notice them.
Villa Sunda is one long concrete plane pushed out over a limestone cliff, with the living room at the far end of it and nothing but the channel below. The architect — who is also your host — spent two years arguing with the engineers about the cantilever and won.
Inside it is deliberately plain: polished concrete, teak, and a lot of nothing. The house is not trying to compete with the view. The pool runs the full length of the western edge so the water reads as continuous with the ocean from the sofa, which is a trick, and a good one.
Mornings are quiet and green. By four the whole house turns gold and stays that way until the sun drops, which in Uluwatu takes about eleven minutes.

“I built this house for my family and we still stay here in March. Ask me where to surf and I will tell you the truth, not the tourist answer.”
