Skaros Cave House
Carved into the caldera wall in 1780, opened to the light in 2019.
Tour coming soon
We film each house room by room. Skaros Cave House is in the schedule — until then, the photographs are all honest.
Straight down the caldera
Three hundred metres of volcanic wall below the terrace, and the whole bay in front of it.
Cool without air conditioning
The rock holds 22°C through August. The AC is there; you probably won't use it.
Plunge pool on the edge
Heated from April. Faces due west, which is the only direction that matters here.
A yposkafo — a house dug into the caldera rock rather than built on it. The back two rooms are original 18th-century excavation, still showing the pick marks, and the front is a glass wall Nikos put in seven years ago, which is the whole idea: the ancient part keeps you cool and the new part gives you the view.
The terrace steps down in three levels to a plunge pool that appears, from inside the house, to be balanced on the edge of the volcano. Sunset here is a genuine event and the house is positioned for it.
Imerovigli is the quiet one. Oia's crowds are a twenty-minute walk along the caldera path, which is worth doing once, early.

“My great-grandfather dug the back room of this house by hand. I only added the glass.”
