Rorbu Nr. 7
A fisherman's cabin on stilts, insulated for a modern winter.
Tour coming soon
We film each house room by room. Rorbu Nr. 7 is in the schedule — until then, the photographs are all honest.
Over the water
The cabin stands on stilts in the harbour. You hear the tide under the floor.
Aurora, if she shows
Dark skies from September to April, and a south-facing window that makes a good spot to wait.
Drying rack and freezer
Fish what you catch. Sindre lends rods and will point at where to go.
A rorbu is a working building: a cabin on stilts where fishermen slept and salted their catch. This one dates to 1936, belonged to Sindre's father, and has been insulated, re-floored and fitted with a wood stove without losing the point of it.
It is painted the standard ochre red, it stands in the harbour at Hamnøy with the Olstinden peak directly behind, and it is possibly the most photographed view in northern Norway. You get to wake up inside it.
Winter is dark and spectacular. Summer has no night at all. Both are worth doing, and they are completely different trips.

“My father salted cod in this building. It is warmer now. The northern lights are not guaranteed and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.”
