Hachimana House
A 1962 Wexler steel house, restored to its drawings.
Tour coming soon
We film each house room by room. Hachimana House is in the schedule — until then, the photographs are all honest.
A documented restoration
Rebuilt against the 1962 drawings, including the breeze-block screen that had been demolished.
Dark sky
No streetlight within three kilometres. The Milky Way is visible with the naked eye most nights.
Pool that stays warm
Solar-heated, usable from March to November, which is longer than the desert lets you think.
Donald Wexler built a handful of steel-framed houses in the high desert in the early sixties, and this is one of them. It had been badly altered — two walls out, the breeze-block screen bulldozed — until Marisol found the original drawings in a Palm Springs archive and spent three years putting it back.
The result is a very precise, very low, very steel house that sits in the creosote looking like it landed there. The breeze-block screen throws a moving grid of light across the living room floor all afternoon, which is exactly what it was drawn to do.
Joshua Tree's west entrance is nine minutes away. The night sky here is the other reason to come.
